How Many Days Do You Need in Bergen?
For a first visit, we recommend spending at least two to three days in Bergen. This gives you plenty of time to explore historic Bryggen, visit the Fish Market, head up Mount Fløyen and simply enjoy the unique atmosphere of the city. If you also want to explore the surrounding region – perhaps visiting the Hardangerfjord, Voss or heading towards the Sognefjord – four to five days is well worth considering. Bergen is also an ideal starting point for a longer road trip through Western Norway.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Bergen?

Do You Need a Car in Bergen?
For exploring Bergen itself, you don’t need a car. Many of the city’s main attractions are within walking distance, and those further away are easy to reach by bus or Bergen’s light rail system. However, if you want to explore the spectacular surroundings – including the Hardangerfjord, Voss, Flåm and the region’s countless waterfalls – renting a car is an excellent option. It gives you the freedom to discover remote viewpoints, small villages and beautiful places that can be difficult to reach by public transport.
How Do You Get from Bergen Airport to the City Centre?
Bergen Airport, Flesland is around 18 kilometres south of the city centre. One of the easiest ways to reach central Bergen is by Bybanen, Bergen’s light rail system. The journey takes around 45 minutes and brings you directly into the heart of the city. Airport buses, taxis and rental cars are also available. If you’re planning a road trip through Western Norway, you can pick up your rental car directly at the airport and begin your journey from there.
