Frequently Asked Questions
About Planning a Trip to Norway
Planning your first trip to Norway? Here you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about getting to Norway, rental cars, camping, travel costs and the best time to visit.
When is the best time to visit Norway?

That depends entirely on what you’re planning to do.
- May to September is ideal for road trips, hiking and fjord cruises.
- June and July offer the longest days and the Midnight Sun in Northern Norway.
- September brings beautiful autumn colours and fewer visitors.
- Winter (November to March) is perfect for Northern Lights trips, skiing and snowy landscapes.
Do I need a car in Norway?

For city trips to Bergen or Oslo, you usually won’t need a car.
However, if you want to explore fjords, waterfalls, national parks or smaller villages, a rental car gives you the most flexibility to discover Norway at your own pace.
👉 Tipp: Compare prices from different rental companies before booking.
Is renting a campervan worth it in Norway?

Yes – especially for road trips.
A campervan gives you maximum flexibility and can often help reduce accommodation costs. It also gives you the freedom to wake up somewhere new every day and experience Norway’s spectacular nature up close.
Is camping allowed in Norway?

Yes. Thanks to Norway’s Right to Roam (Allemannsretten), camping in nature is permitted in many places.
However, there are some important rules:
- Keep at least 150 metres away from inhabited houses and cabins
- Stay no more than two nights in the same place
- Respect nature and the environment
- Leave no rubbish behind
Campsites also offer facilities such as showers, electricity, washing machines and other amenities.
How expensive is a trip to Norway?

Norway is considered one of the more expensive travel destinations in Europe.
However, the actual cost of your trip depends heavily on how you choose to travel.
- Accommodation: from around €80 per night
- Campsites: from around €25–45 per night
- Rental cars: from around €40 per day
- Campervans: depending on the season, from around €90 per day
With some careful planning, however, it’s absolutely possible to travel around Norway on a smaller budget.
Which payment methods are accepted in Norway?

Card payments are accepted almost everywhere in Norway.
Even small purchases can usually be paid for contactlessly. Cash is rarely needed.
Do I have to pay road tolls?

Yes.
Many roads, tunnels and bridges in Norway are subject to tolls.
With a rental car, tolls are usually registered automatically and charged to you later by the rental company.
Do I need a vignette?

No.
Norway does not use a motorway vignette system like some other European countries.
Can I drink tap water in Norway?

Yes.
Norwegian tap water is of excellent quality and is generally perfectly safe to drink.
Do I need a passport?

For citizens of the EU and EEA, a valid national ID card is generally sufficient. Your ID should remain valid throughout your trip. However, always check the latest entry requirements before travelling.
Are there plenty of charging stations for electric cars?

Yes.
Norway has one of Europe’s most extensive EV charging networks. Fast-charging stations are also widely available outside the larger cities.
